We did a few more steps (uh - the DH did a few more). It's looking good and I've included an in-progress photo. I'm linking to my first linking party: National Take A Risk Day. I was inspired before I started by some other design bloggers' posts about taking up stair runners.

I just took my runner off too and know it's such a pain in the patootie, but so worth it! Your stairs look like they're in really nice shape - lucky!
Thanks, Lisa! Actually the wood is finished just like our floors. When we looked at the house thinking about buying it, (it was new but not built by us) the stairs did not have runners. When we moved in, we were not so pleasantly surprised by the installation of runners. The stairs will be so easy to clean now.
